Sitka deer, Windy Bay, Haida Gwaii, BC

Introduced in the late 19th century as an additional food source for the Haida peoples, Sitka deer have become abundant on the islands of Haida Gwaii. By overgrazing the local flora, they have done significant damage to the island’s ecosystem, so the Haida Nation forest guardian program encourages hunting to reduce total numbers. This adult (!) deer was having a rest on a fallen tree only about 10 meters away when our group walked by.
